Stalag Luft 1 was situated just north of Barth, Germany, a picturesque town on the north coast of Germany on the Baltic Sea. Summer is nice but the winter is cold and wet, with snow lasting until May. The soil is sandy and you would hit water just five feet down, which made tunneling very difficult.
There are several web pages that do a good job of providing details about Stalag Luft 1. If you're interested, try: 303rd Bomb Group, B24.net, MemoriesShop.com, Merkki.com, POWVETS.com, nationalww2museum.org.
My dad, like most POWs, spent a lot of time reading books, drawing sketches, and writing letters. They also dreamed of being home and many tried hard to escape. Shown below are a few well publicized photos of Stalag Luft 1, but also images from my dad's YMCA Wartime Log book, and other items from his collection.
